A few weeks back I had a conception appointment with a local midwife at her free standing birth center. Now, those of you who are from the US are probably wondering - WHY not an OBGYN? At a hospital? Well, I could go into a list of reasons but bottom line is - it is my choice and I have the right chose a midwife vs an OBGYN.
*Disclaimer - I am NOT saying that OBGYNs are bad or that Hosptials are bad. I have just made the personal choice to use a Midwife instead. Please note: Mama Gracie's supports ALL types of care providers. What's right for one person will not be the right choice for someone else. That is the beauty of having OPTIONS!*
Okay, so let's start out simple... let's answer a few other questions you might have before we go any further. First off, what exactly is a Midwife? And how do they differ from OBGYNs.
When asked why she opened a free standing birth center Deb responded with; "Opening a birth center was a passion of mine to make midwifery care more available to women in our community. Most insurance policies will cover a birth center birth, which gives most women the option of birthing out of the hospital if they wish".
Okay, now that we know the difference between a Midwife & an OBGYN and types of care let's move onto what a conception appointment is and why someone would want to do one!
When asked these questions, Deb responded stating that, "seeing a practitioner while trying to conceive helps you prepare your body to welcome a new little one. There are screenings that can be done to make sure your hormones are balanced, your iron is high enough, and that you are in good health. Our visits are very educationally based and you will gain a ton of knowledge before you even become pregnant"!
For me this was more than enough reason to have an appointment. I'm a type 'A' person who has to plan and control everything. I want to make sure that I am at my healthiest to provide the healthiest and safest start for my future child.
What exactly was covered at my appointment? Here I will give you a brief overview!
Before my appointment Debbie, asked me to keep a food journal for a week and bring it with me to the meeting as well as any documentation I have been doing of my cycles. As we went over my diet and supplements I have been taking. Here is what I learned!
Nutrition & Supplements
Debbie also educated me on the importance to temping, checking my cervix position (cp) as well as cervical fluid/mucus (cf/cm). I apologize if this seems gross or weird at first - especially to those of you super new to it. I will be very frank - I'm still confused on WHERE my cervix is. I feel dumb because I know where to find it on a picture graph but when I'm feeling for it to check I have no idea where it is! I have my well woman appointment for my pap coming up soon. I will ask for the Doctor to point it out to me at the appointment. Hopefully I will learn. Anyway! In a near future blog I will spend a great deal of time sharing my new knowledge of using Fertility Awareness Method (checking cp, cm/cf and temping). Stay tuned for that to learn more about Fertility Tracking...
But moving on... what else did Deb tell me?
Oh yes, I asked about chiropractic work as well as acupuncture and mental health. Deb was very forward that all of these were beneficial to overall body & mental health! I will be doing more research on this coming up. I also have my first chiropractic appointment in the next few weeks to interview a professional on how their work could help someone who is trying to get pregnant. Deb answered ALL my questions and helped point me in the right direction to continue on this journey.
My appointment with Debbie was one hour long! She really look the time to listen to me and laid everything out that I needed to know. I honestly can't say I would have had the same treatment if I had gone to see an OBGYN about this, especially early on while TTCing.
