Welcome back to today's installment of "My friends all think I'm crazy because my baby is sleeping in a box." I'm your host, Emily Giles. Yesterday was a very interesting day for the BBCFBB throughout my friends. Everyone I know is so intrigued and freaked out by the idea of babies actually sleeping in boxes. (One friend even told me that's a cat thing.) So, for my dear friends who are reading this daily and thinking I'm a complete and utter freak, here are some more facts about the BBCFBB taken from good Ol' Mr Google.
In the 1930s Finland was financially destitute. Due to this, the infant mortality rate was shocking: About 6070 babies out of every 1,000 passed. That is exponentially higher than most other countries in that decade. When the government implemented the maternal care package system (BBCFBB and other supplies) it gave all infants, no matter what ethnic or economic background, an equal start in life and it is credited as being what turned the infant mortality rate around for that country. Today, Finland has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world. Some people think that the closed sides of the box present a health hazard to infants, much the same as a crib bumper would. However, what people don't realize is, the reason crib bumpers are dangerous is because they are soft and can come unattached from the railings of a traditional crib. If a baby were to roll to the wall of the baby box there is no soft surface for them to get stuck in or choke on so the risk is minimal.
Yesterday Beans was having a lot of tummy trouble in the late afternoon. She did not want to be put down for anything. Not in the swing, not in the box, not in the crib, nowhere. Due to this our timing for bed was about a half an hour off, so I apologize for the lack of consistency for At 10:30pm we changed her, fed her, and laid her down for sleep. She was sleepy when we put her down so she drifted almost immediately and I don't know if she was just extremely tired or what because she woke up at 7am! She slept through the night for the first time EVER LAYING FLAT on her back! This is a miracle! For a little girl who still can't stand to be alone in her crib (we've been trying daily) that's insane. She woke up happy as a clam, with a very soaked diaper, and my under eye circles are just a little less black today because of it. (Extra points for sleeping-through the night ability) We are more than halfway through our BBCFBB experiment and I honestly can say I just love it so far. Under normal swaddle, sleep, wake circumstances it is a wonderful alternative for a crib for us and we will be keeping the box until she physically cannot fit anymore. However, for the ast three nights we will be changing up the variables to see what happens. I'm a curious little SICP (self identified crazy person) so let's see if I get any sleep these next few nights. I'm not quite sure how she will react to her routine changing, but we're going to try!
